The young and beautiful Serafina is betrothed to the apothecary Don Annibale Pistacchio, much to the chagrin of Serafina's love interest, the young Enrico. The ceremony is fixed for the day before Don Annibale's departure for Rome. Having learned of this fact, Enrico, with Serafina's complicity, tries in every way to prevent the marriage from being consummated that night, so as to gain time for an attempt to have it annulled.
